Professor Refat El-Sheikhy is a distinguished professor of nanotechnology, Fracture mechanics, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, bionanocomposites, and biodental materials at king saud university. He has great number of publication in prestegeous international journals like nature. He has many granted patents in the fields of nanocomposites applications. He is the founder and author of recent fracture mechanics approach called directional fracture approach and fracture mechanics theories called directional fracture theories. He discovered rare earth nanoparticles in Saudi Arabia called SHNTs. He also discovered Saudi nanoparticles MMT. He invented rapid processing, anti-fracture, high strength, lightweight, thermal resistant, impact resistant, bionanocomposite concrete material without using Portland Cement or water to replace the conventional concrete. He was a foreign guest professor at Osaka University (1997-2008). He was a JSPS fellow (2007-2008) as invited professor for long term to solve the problem of fracture of Zirconia coating produced by high thermal plasma spray technology. He constructed nanotechnology lab at King Saud University for producing clay based polymer nanocomposites. He invented new technology for producing Clay based polymer nanocomposites. He was working at faculty of Engineering, king Saud University (2008-2023) in the fields of nanotechnology, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and environmental applications to solve several serious and complicated problems in Saudi Arabia regarding the water saving, energy saving, soil problems, structural problems, and materials innovations. He got several international prizes like Gold prizes at Geneva internal innovation exhibition. He got The prize of King Saud University and prizes in Japan. Nowadays, he is working as a Professor of biodental materials and applications at “Development and Innovation in Oral and Dental Health Research Chair”, Dental Health Department, College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University since 2023 until now. He participated at many international conferences and exhibitions. He chaired several international conferences. Also, he was working as distinguished professor at Institute of concrete research, at HBRC, Egypt.
